Patrizia Calefato is Associate Professor of “Sociolinguistica” and “Linguistica informatica” in the Facoltà di Lingue e Letterature straniere, Università degli studi di Bari. She also teaches in the same University:”Analisi socio-antropologica del prodotto di moda” in the Corso di laurea in Scienze e tecnologie della moda; “Sociolinguistica” in the Corso di laurea in Scienze della comunicazione. Her main fields of interest are: Social dimension of language, Fashion studies, Sociolinguistics and Sociosemiotics, Cultural studies, Feminist studies, Audiovisual media studies.
She is member of the Board of Advisors of “Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture”, Oxford , Berg.

She is advisor of Meltemi Publishers, Rome .

She has been assistant president of the Associazione Italiana di Studi Semiotici from 1998 to 2002.

She taught in many Italian and foreign Universities, among which: University of Helsinki : Semiotic Programme Course on: “Myth, fashion, cinema: a semiotic approach” (2002) and "Barthes's Relevance Today" (2007). New Bulgarian University , Sofia : Seminars on “Language and Power” during the Early Fall Semiotic School (2003). Università di Macerata: corso di eccellenza in “Semiotica della moda” (2006); Stockholm University: "Levande Mode" (Living Fashion) (2007).

She is the author of many books. Among them:
